Press Release Regarding Turkey's Chairmanship of the Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD)

Türkiye Cumhuriyeti Dışişleri Bakanlığı 01.07.2014

No: 223, 1 July 2014

Turkey has assumed the Chair of the Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD) for 2014-2015 as of 1 July 2014.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Turkey will chair the annual GFMD Summit Meeting to be hosted by Turkey in 2015.

The Chairmanship of the Forum, besides its contribution to the international visibility of Turkey's active and multi-dimensional foreign policy, will give Turkey a say on migration and development issues that have started playing an agenda-setting role at the United Nations.

Turkey will play an active role on the issue of migration, which is expected to be included in the UN's Post-2015 Development Agenda, based on the experience of our citizens living in Western Europe with their contributions both to Turkey and to the development of their countries of residence as well as on the key role Turkey assumed within its region in the management of the migrants that it has been hosting.

Turkey, which provides temporary protection to more than one million Syrians, will have the opportunity to share its efficiency and experience regarding migration management in the international arena and offer lasting solutions for globalized migration.
